Defiance City School
Defiance City School will be a kindergarten through fifth grade school complex with approximately 1600 occupants in more than 127,000 square feet in area. The HVAC systems were designed to reduce energy consumption and to allow the Owner complete flexibility in scheduling the use of the building.
Systems include:
103 Geothermal Heat Pumps with a minimum rating of 21 EER (energy efficiency ratio) to provide simultaneous heating and cooling for the building.
Eight (8) Energy Recovery Units to transfer a percentage of the exhaust sensible and latent energy to the incoming ventilation air. The total thermal efficiency in the heating season is between 45% and 70% and between 30% and 55% in the cooling season. Also, two of the energy recovery units have VFD’s on the supply and exhaust fans.
A variable flow water system consisting of two (2) 560 gpm pumps run in parallel with VFD’s distributes the glycol solution from the well field (consisting of 120 holes, each 300 feet in depth) to the heat pumps throughout the building.
A geothermal well field diverting valve redirects the system water away from the well field and circulates the water only within the building. It saves on two-thirds (2/3) of the pressure on the pumps allowing them to slow down to save energy.
A DDC control system controls all space temperatures and HVAC equipment operation.
